package design case study dissection of layers
the following is a short excerpt from one of three case studies I wrote focusing on sustainability and package design:
“The product itself (yam cake) is a 5” sphere with the depth of 1/2”. The packaging (as seen on the dissection sheet) consists of five separate pieces (not including the utensil set) made up of a top and base, 1 inner plastic tray, the “framing unit”, and a plastic wrap. The package is not right-sized and many of these additional layers are not necessary for the package to function as a whole. These additional layers mean more resources must be used, processed, and transported resulting in an increased amount of stress imposed on the environment.”
